My personal favorite would have to be the first. I have a thing for classics. Like movie sequels or trilogies, the first is always more complex and intricate. After all, the characters must be established quickly to ensure the proper pacing of the plot. So, like most classics, the first is my favorite.
Strongbad quickly establishes his characters, using standard archetypal personalites. However, unlike his comtemporaries, his sacarstic yet often humanistic take on the complex life of high school girls is unmatched. Within moments we understand and know someone just like each character, Ms. So and so, the popular one, the boy crazed slut, and the ugly duckling. Strongbad's immediate character development quickly draws his viewer in, allowing the focus to be the film itself.
At first, this film seems to be a simplistic satire on the tirings of hormonal teenage girls. But it is much more than that- behind the subtlies of Strongbad's political statements, is a layer of depth. While trying to 'dress to impress,' Kristin's body is aruptly severed. How many other women out there secretly wish their friends would drop dead because we simply felt they looked better than us? One by one, the girls are arrowed, chomped, and pelted by the slings of female jealousy until all that remains is the obliverated pieces of a once strong feminist movement. Strongbad didn't just write a cartoon; he wrote a cleverly disguised statement about the female perspective in a world of plastics: feminism is dead, and it was woman who killed it. |
